My names are: Chinedu Vincent Akuta.

This course will teach you the meaning of articles, types of articles, why you want to write, who is your audience, basic knowledge and skills of writing articles, examples, tips of writing good articles, etc.

At the end of this course, the student should be able to write sound articles.

Lecture 2 05:19

Welcome to lecture 2 of this course, on this lecture, we will look at the different type of articles one can write. We will go into details, to explain each and every one of the articles.

No 1, articles for media houses or media companies. These are articles you write for, media publications or media houses like, Guardian Newspapers of UK, Daily Mail in the UK, or written for BBC UK, or VOA (Voice of America), or any of the newspapers, in any part of the world or any country. If look at the example, I showed you on lecture 1, that is an article for a media house/company. That article was actually written for a media house in the city where I live.

No 2, the formal and informal articles. The difference between the formal and informal articles, are in the choice of words that you use, the audience, and the structure of the article. If you writing a formal article, you write the words in full, whereas if you are writing an informal article, you can abbreviate words. An example of what I am say is, while your are writing a formal article, you write the words like these, I would not, I should not, I could not, etc. Whereas if you are writing an informal article, you can write, I wouldn't ,I shouldn't, I couldn't etc. These words for informal article were written in abbreviations. Also while you are writing a formal article, you might not know the audience, or you might know the audience, but the language of your writing the article has to be formal. Whereas if you are doing an informal article, you might know your audience or you might not know your audience, but chances are that you might know your audience and your audience might know you. You might be friends or friendly with your audience. You might choose to use short words.

It's not a bad idea to write in short words, provided that you are writing for an audience which you know very very well. Then the structure of your article will also differ, for example if your writing for a media house, most likely it's going to be a formal article, and they will give you their specifications to follow.

No 3, academic articles. These are articles, written while you were in school, colleges, universities. You can also write an academic article for a professional body like the nursing councils, pharmaceutical societies, medical councils, etc, see an example of academic article on this lecture's slide. Academic articles are an example of formal articles. The language has to be formal. You have to write in full, while you are writing academic articles.

No 4, articles for personal blogging, these could be articles you write for your own blogs or your own personal website. Most of the time, you might know your audience or your readers, or you might not even know your readers, but you might choose to write in a language that suits you or that you like to write in. You might even write with abbreviations. That is your article. You are writing to an audience that knows you or understands what you are communicating to them. Finally you need to know the different kinds of article, and know how to write, know the kinds of words to choose while you are writing each of the articles.

Lecture 3 05:19

Hi, welcome to lecture 3, of this course, this lecture will look at why do you want to write, what types of articles do you wish to write, the editorial requirements, who is your audience, what does your audience want to read. Now let's look at why do want to write.

Why do you want to write, what is your passion, what is driving you to write, what message do you want to give out, what story do you want to tell, what do you want to tell the public or your audience. You need to ask yourself this question and then find out what is your passion, example, do you like fashion, do you like sports, under sports, do you like football, or cycling or swimming or what kind of sports do you like. What is your passion. These will determine why you want to write. Then what types of article do you wish to write. Do you want to write for the media houses, that is newspapers, magazines, online journals, or the TV Houses or Radio Stations or do you want to write for your personal blog.

So again, you need to find out from yourself, what type of articles you wish to write. The next thing is the editorial requirements. Depending on what you want to write and who you want to write for, there might be some editorial requirements which you must have to abide by, for example, if your writing for a magazine or a newspaper, they might have a requirements that means, you must have to write less than a thousand words. They might require you to write 500 words or 350 words. Depending on the editorial requirements, they might give you a specification of how to write their articles. So the requirements here will vary, that would be relative to the company or media house, you are working for.

The next thing is, who is your audience. By the time you have answered why you want to write, and determines, what time of articles you wish to write, then you will be able to know your kind of audience. Again, if you want to write about football, or if your passion is about children, let's use football for an example, definitely your audience will be footballers and football fans. Fans in particular. Bear that in mind.

The next thing is what does your audience want to read from you. Again back to our example here, if your writing about football, your audience would like to read about football. They want to read about what happened in English league or Italian league and things like that. You don't have to write about politics to your fans, who are footballers. That wouldn't work. Nobody would read. All your fans want to read is what they want and what they like. They would like to read about football. They want to read about the latest news about football, so you have to bear that in mind, that you need to write about what your audience wants to read. That way, they will be able to either buy your newspaper or your magazine or be able to visit your blogs, because you are writing what they want to read.

Let's do a bit of recap, why do you want to write, you need to answer that. What types of article, do you wish to write, you need to ask yourself this question, and then be able to come up with an answer. Then the editorial requirements will vary. Who is your audience will depend on the kind of article you want to write, and then what your audience want to read, will determine what you are writing.

Lecture 4 03:32

Hi welcome to lecture 4 of this course. On this lecture, we will discuss about choosing a topic for your article. There are things you need to take into consideration, before you decide on your topic. Your topic is so important, because that is the first thing a reader will see. That is like a gateway to your article, so it's very, very important.

If you want to choose a topic, number one point is that you should make it shorter. The shorter the better. I will recommend between 2 to 15 words. No 2, make it attractive, make it attention/eye catching. Make it to be inviting, such that anyone that sees the topic, would want to read. No 3, start the first letter of your topic, with a capital letter. No 4, make it bold, use a higher font, to write your topic. No 5, underline your topic. No 6, put your topic on the centre of the page of your article. See an example on the video slide of this lecture

Lecture 5 03:39

Hello, welcome to lecture 5 of this course, hope you have enjoyed the previous lectures. This lecture will look at planning your article. You need to plan your article very well. Note down all your points and ideas. Write them down. Anything you think, any idea, any point you feel you want to write down, please put them on a piece of paper. Write them down, and then plan the sequence of your points. What I mean is this, look at the ideas, you have written down, think of how to arrange them. Think of the order, the will take. Think of the sequencing. What will come first, what will come second, what will come third, on the line of your arguments. Arrange your points, in such a way that it will be sequenced. Make sure that, there would be a linkage, from the first paragraph, to the second paragraph, and to the third paragraph, on till the last paragraph.

Do your reading, and research on the topic you want to write, that is very very important. Look at the topic, loot at the related topics, do your research, so you will be able to have an idea, of what you want to write. You have more knowledge of what you want to write when you read. That is so important, because when you are writing an article, people will read your article and then judge your article based on the contents, of what you have written. That is why it's important for you to be able to read and update your knowledge about the topic you want to write.

Lecture 6 05:55

Welcome to lecture 6, of this course on this lecture, we will look at the paragraph and structure of article. Now the first thing you need to write, if your writing an article is the first paragraph, the opening paragraph, more like your introduction. Use this paragraph to give the reader an idea, what the article will be all about. Put as much information as possible, on the first paragraph. Make it to have more contents. Make it in such a way that the reader will want to read the rest of the article. Put as much information as possible, you can put on the first paragraph. Make sure the first paragraph links, to the body of the article.

After writing your first paragraph, go to the body of the article, under the body of the article, which could be your second or third, or fourth paragraph, make sure you explore, expand your topic, write as much as possible, bring out all the stories you have to tell. Bring up all the arguments, you have to make, cite examples, cite authors, bring up your facts, and figures, be able to make a strong case. Write as much details as possible. Bring up all you need to write, on this stage of your article. Write facts. Write in details. Put in more points.

After writing the body of the article, you go to the last paragraph. Under the last paragraph you write your conclusion. Give a bit of a summary, of what the whole article is all about. Cap your article, by bringing up suggestions, ideas, or recommendations. While closing your article, make sure, you bring up something like, suggestions, or your own ideas, or what you think. But let your conclusion be a snap shot of all you have written from the beginning till the end of the article.

After finishing your last paragraph, go down to the end of the article and the put your details, write your names, write your address, and include the date you write the article. You can put your website or your email address. Again depending on who you are writing for. If you are writing for some media houses, you might need to put only your names. If you are writing for yourself, you might decide to put your names, your telephone number, your website, or your email address. Depending on the style or the editorial requirements or who you are writing for, but remember to put your names at the end of your articles. You can either put it at the left side, which is more popular, or you might choose to put it on the right side. But preferably on the left side of the article.

Lecture 7 05:43

Hello, welcome to lecture 7 of this course, I hope you have enjoyed the previous lectures. On this lecture, we will be looking at the knowledge and skills of how to write articles. The no 1 point we need to look at here is, when you are writing an article, write in simple English or any other language. If you're writing in French, or in Spanish or in Arabic or in Chinese, or in India languages, or any other language, your writing with, please write in the simplest words. That way, any person can be able to read and understand your message. Use simple vocabularies to write your work.

After writing your work, take some time, to proof read your work, go through your work one more time, read it through again. Look out for mistakes, look out for typo errors. After doing that on your own, if you have any opportunity, you can call someone, either your friends, or relations, or colleagues, to help you to proof read your work because two heads are better one.

Read and research related topics before you write. That way you will be able to have an updated knowledge while you are writing. That's no point writing an article based on outdated knowledge or with an old information. So that is why you need to update your knowledge. Give out the present information while writing.

Write what you're passionate about. What are you passionate about? Write on those topics, on what you like. Write what you would wish to read if you were a reader. Put yourself in the reader's shoes. Imagine yourself to be a reader. What are those things you want to read about? So write with passion, and write about what you're passionate about. That way, you wouldn't get tired of writing. Writing will flow easily, when you are doing something you like, when your writing about what interests you so much. Create a connection between you and the reader, write in such a way that you will be able to connect with the reader or the reader will be able to connect with you. Put your facts, in such a manner that, somebody reading the article, or reading your work, will have a connection with that piece of article that you have written. Some people would read an article and get so much emotional, get so much attached to the work or to the article. Write in such a manner that people would begin to attach with your article.

Write in short sentences. It's better for you to write in short sentences. People can easily read it, when your sentences are short. Put commas where appropriate, put full stops where appropriate. Spell your words correctly. Use the dictionary to check the words you are using. Words can mean many things to many people. Make sure your using the right words at the right time, and at the right places, in your article. Remember words can mean different things to different people, so make sure in choosing the appropriate words to write and put them at the right places.

Lecture 8 05:25

Hello, welcome again to lecture 8 of this course, on this lecture, we will look at the tips, that would help you to write a good article, No 1, discover your best moments to write, what time is your best moment to write, some might like to write early in the morning. Some might like to write in the evening, some might like to write in the afternoon. What is your best moment to write? Think about that. Ask yourself this question, when is the best time for me to start writing. If you discover this time, please always write when is best for you to write.

No 2, find a relaxed environment to write. What kind of environment do you like to write on, or do you like to stay to write. Do you like to go to the library, do you like to lock up yourself in the bedroom, or in the lounge or in the kitchen, or in the bathroom, which environment gives you the best opportunity to write. If you have discovered your environment, within which you write very well, stick to that.

No 3, find an inspiration, find a motivation. What motivates you to write, what inspires you to write? What is the driving force for you to write? Let's use an example of football, or a football fan or football reporter or your writing about football, what drives you to write, about football, or let's talk about Rugby, or wrestling, etc, what drives you or where do you get your inspiration, what gets you motivated. These are the factors that you need to discover. Get motivated, get inspired to write. When you are inspired or when you are motivated, that is when you bring out the best in you. So look out for these two things, inspiration and motivation, check out for what gives you these two things, that way you will be able to produce excellent articles, because you are writing when you are at your best elements.

No 4, do not be afraid to make any mistake, no one is above making mistakes. Don't be afraid of making any mistake while writing. You can actually improve when you have made a mistake.

No 5, concentrate while you are writing. Make sure there are no distractions. Make sure your mind is not jumping from one place to another. Bring out a particular time. Make sure you are focusing on your work or article. When you give it your attention, or when you give your article all the attention it requires, you produce an excellent work.

No 6, set a deadline for your writing. Give our writing sometime within which, to complete it. You can give yourself one day, two days, three days, four days, five days, six days or even some hours, depending on your capabilities. Set a time limit, within which you complete your article. That way you know you have a target to meet. Again it depends on yourself or if you're working for a company or media house, more like they might give you a task to do, that way you have a deadline within which to complete. If you are writing an academic article, obviously you have a deadline within which to complete your article. Same as when you are writing your own article. Set your time limits, set a deadline for your article to be completed.

No 7, avoid repetition of words when you are writing article. Do not repeat the same words over and over again. Use different words, when you are writing, so that the reader wouldn't get tired of having to read same words over and all over again.
