Have you ever felt so creatively drained that you wondered if youd ever want to create again?
Or, on the flipside, have you ever felt so inspired you couldnt get the words or images on the page quickly enough?
These are both natural parts of a creative lifestyle. Often, the busy and unpredictable world around us can have a huge impact on the way we create. Actually, they can have too big of an impact if were not careful.
In this course were going to talk about:
·How establishing healthy practices and routines can help you maintain your focus and get you out of ruts and into a creative mindset thats not dependent upon random bursts of inspiration
·Without healthy lifestyles:
You feel drained, tired, sometimes jealous of others successes
·With healthy lifestyles:
You better understand why you feel certain a certain way about your own creativity and others art
You know how to build in time to create, even in a busiest week
You trust that even when you get knocked down youll be able to get take feedback in a way that lets you get back up again and keep moving toward your creative vision for the future
I know the creative journey can be hard a confusing at times, but in the end its absolutely worth the effort. You have some incredible art inside you that deserves to see the light of day. I look forward to walking through this creative process together!
Welcome!
We can all remember a time in our lives where a song, piece of art or film connected with us on a deep level. We as artists have the ability to share our thoughts and emotions in a way that can have a huge impact on the lives of the people who experience our art. First, though, we need to make sure we're taken care of as artists...
Before you even begin to establish specific patterns for your own creative lifestyle, you first have to know and understand who you are as a person.
You have a unique view, take advantage of it, as no one will see or do things exactly like you do.
To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Get to know who you are:
Where have you been? (past)
Where are you now? (present)
Where are you going? (future)
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Knowing where weve been and where were going helps us best understand how where we are now fits into the big picture.
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. - Pablo Picasso
In this segment, we will look at elements of the creative process through the lens of you.
The journey of the artists can be confusing, an exhilarating pursuit and a roller coaster ride. We face challenges along the way, but in the end it's worth the pursuit.
We are all insecure. Have you ever felt like a fraud, and its only a matter of time before someone figures out that youre faking it? Even Meryl Streep has at times.
When it comes to dealing with doubt, it's absolutely essential to learn to trust your creative taste again.
What moves you on a deep level?
In this segment we will focus on getting back to the basics of what you believe when it comes to creating art.
What art do you love? What got you interested in creating in the first place?
A great article about celebrities dealing with creative insecurity.
The motivations behind our creativity will either be internal or external motivators:
Internal Examples passion, meaning, expression
External Examples fame, financial gain, recognition
As well talk about in the next section, understanding what drives us to create can inform how we should gauge our success.
When it comes to gauging success for our creativity, it's important to remember that making art can be very subjective. Who are you creating for? Personal reasons? Commercial reasons? How do your motivations fit in to your approach to creating?
Success is not to be measured by the position someone has reached in life, but the obstacles he has overcome while trying to succeed. Booker T. Washington
You dont need to be a professional to be successful. Once you know a little more about who you are, why youre creating and your desired outcome, youre better able to actually jump into the process. Next were going to talk more about establishing very specific and intentional rhythms and routines.
Developing a structure for our creativity to function in can help remove some of the things in our lives that drain the energy and excitement from making art, and allows us to identify the important filling experiences we need to incorporate.
As artists, we need to have our own dedicated physical space to create, along with the proper amount of time to make art without pressure.
Get creative!
Like a farmer working the land season after season, we need to become comfortable with the understanding that there will be good and hard times in our creative journey.
Have you ever had your plans not go as you had hoped? That seems to be a common theme of life. In this segment we'll look at how to deal with things not going according to plan.
After looking at our plans not going as hoped, it's important to have an attitude of growth. We may not be able to change what happened, but we can apply the lessons we learn along the way to how we move forward.
Remember the golden rule while collaborating: treat others how you would like to be treated, and things will turn out as well as possible.
When collaborating with the right person, the quality and efficiency of your work often goes up dramatically.
Working together with someone on a piece of art can be a lot like going on a first date...nerve-wracking, exciting or frustrating.
The explanation for beads of sweat on my head...
When surrounded by other artists, we'll often either get inspired or intimidated. In this segment we'll look at how to best approach the scenario.
By having a solid support system, we'll be in the healthiest place to create our art.
Getting someone's opinion on your creative work can be hard, especially when it's not really positive. In this segment we discuss how to handle those bumps in the road.
Pour yourself into your art, then not take it personally when it's rejected? Difficult, but not impossible.
Like digging up an already-planted tree, re-working our art can be hard to do, but worth it in the end.
Thank you and a great poem to encourage us in our creativity!
