- Have a connections strategy to build up your own network of contacts

This lecture will look at the history of LinkedIn and how it developed
In 2012, LinkedIn was hacked and 6.4 million passwords were stolen. This lecture will show you the most frequently used passwords i.e. the one's hackers will try first, and then go on to explain one way of creating strong passwords. We can't guarantee you won't get hacked, but this will make it more difficult.
This lecture will take you step by step through the process of setting up a basic account. If you have one already, then mark this lecture as complete.
Now that you have a LinkedIn account, lets take a look around it. This lecture looks at each screen in turn and highlights some of the features of LinkedIn.

About optimising your profile
This lecture looks at why you need to optimise your profile and what this entails.
I have a lot of experience reviewing profiles and offering suggestions on how to improve them and these are the most common mistakes people make. Avoid them, and your profile will be far ahead of your rivals.
Premium accounts on LinkedIn
This lecture will show you how you go about prioritising sections in your profile, so that the sections recruitment agents, potential employers, customers and business partners see first are those that are most relevant to them.

Unlike your resume, on LinkedIn you should include all jobs that you have worked at. Why? Because that way, people you've worked with in the past can connect with you. You never know where the next job, customer or business associate will come from.
Recording your skills and getting them endorsed makes your LinkedIn profile much more useful to recruitment staff and potential employers than your paper resume or CV. Make sure that they can see exactly what it is you're good at.
Employers want to know 3 things. Do you have the:
- knowledge
- skills
- experience
to do the job.
This section shows where you gained your knowledge from. It is also a point of connection for you, allowing your class mates to connect with you.
For a complete profile, LinkedIn requires you to have 50+ connections. This lecture will help you develop a connection strategy that will help you build up your network. Check out the additional resource. It's a really good post setting out which type of people you should have in your network.

Overview of optional sections
Without a summary, the first thing a person will read is your experience. Surely, you are more than the sum of your work experience? Use a summary to let people know what you do and what you can bring to an organisation. For some ideas, check out the additional resources.
If you speak more than one language, record them here. If this section is not relevant to you, just mark the section as complete.
In this lecture we look at the 3 types of certification and show you how to add them to your profile.
If you have a patent registered or pending, then this is where you can record it.
A publication can be anything from an article to a book. If you have had some work published, record it here.
The volunteering and causes section allows you to record:
- organisations you volunteer with
- organisations you support
- causes you care about.
The Addition Information section records:
- interests
- birthday/date of birth
- martial status
- advice for contacting you.
How much you complete will depend on your level of privacy and what you deem necessary.
Overview of sections for students
Courses can be stand alone, qualifications or be used to build up into qualifications or certifications. Record you your courses and link them to either a job or qualification.
Project can be either part of a qualification or part of a job. Record details of projects that you were a member of and link them to either the qualification or job.
Primarily used by students, test scores provide an indication of how well a student on a course is doing.
Originally intended for students, awards and honors can be used to record both personal and professional achievements.
Used primarily by students to record membership of organisations at college and university.
Recommendations on LinkedIn are like references in advance and this lecture will show you how to ask for, and give, recommendations.
Below your recommendations are your connections. You can specify whether or not you want your connections to see them. This lecture will show you how.
Groups are LinkedIn's networking hubs where you can view information, join discussion and develop new contacts. This lecture will provide you with an overview of groups.
This lecture will look at the Pulse section on the Interests tab and show you how you can follow influencers, news channels and publications. You can then share articles with your connections.
Following companies on LinkedIn is a great way of keeping up to date with what they say about themselves. You can also see who in your network works there and what products and services they have.
This is a quick checklist for your profile. Print it off and use it to check that your profile is complete.
