In this lecture, we'll talk about two possible Resume strategies:
- One fits All
- Case by Case
I'll present you the pros & cons of each of the two strategies and which one fits best in which situation.
This lecture will shortly list you what kind of content i put into my own resume.
A deep-dive on each content section will be presented in section 3 later on...
Learn how professional pictures are a wise investment in your career and support your personal branding.
In this short intro, I'll explain you why the next lecture is not a video, but a PDF file for you to download and print... :)
In this PDF lecture I'll take you to a Resume Content Deep Dive,
which you can download & print while you're writing your own Resume later on.
We'll cover the following Resume sections:
- General Info
- Education
- Work Experience
- Skills
- Languages
- Optional: Legal Notes
We'll also clarify what HR staff mean by hard skills versus soft skills.
Verify your Knowledge on Resume Strategy & Content
In this video, we'll cover optional content you could put into your Resume in order to let it shine even more:
- Awards
- Trainings & Certifications
- Voluntary Work
The on-going debate about how many pages a Resume should consist of is probably endless and as old as Resumes themselves. In this lecture, we'll discuss possible perspectives on this topic in order to help you chose a strategy that works for you.
Not every advice you get regarding Resume writing might work for you.
The motto regarding Resumes is "Stay real!" and I'll discuss in this lecture why this is important to keep in mind in order to not get demotivated.
Some might think that design is waste of time and a bunch of marketing juice.
Let me explain you why they are dead wrong and how you can use this to your advantage...
This basic design principle is implanted in our minds already in a very young age.
I would like to emphasize once more why it is so important to follow in the business world, including Resumes...
Misaligned elements or text are one of the top reasons for a Resume to look unprofessional.
I'll show you a couple of basic rules to keep in mind which will let you feel safe while creating your Resume.
Not everyone of us is a graphic designer and that's ok.
However, that's not a reason for bad color decisions in your Resume.
You'll learn basic color theory and
which free online tool can help you to find out which colors go well together.
I bet you know already not to use the font type "Comic Sans MS" for your Resume, right? ;)
In this lecture, will go one step further in helping you to make the right font style decisions for your Resume.
In this lecture, I'll explain you what I mean by the "Principle of Repetition"
and why repetition is a good thing, if not exaggerated of course.
Verify your Knowledge on the Basic Design Principles
Just a hint regarding my PowerPoint version, before we continue...
As a first step, I'll introduce in detail how the resulting Resume for the Project Manager looks like
and discuss a bit about his general profile in order for you to get an idea who he is.
We'll also cover why this does have an influence on design decisions and
why you should think about this when creating your own Resume.
First, we'll chose the right color scheme for our Project Manager Resume.
Then we'll chose the right font types & styles.
In order to provide a kind of border frame for the main content,
we'll start with the header & footer sections of the Resume first as they're (mostly) the same on every slide anyway.
Now we'll add the general info section for the Project Manager Resume.
Then we'll continue by adding the education section which will complete the first slide of the Resume.
As we'll need some more space for the work experience section, we'll put that on a separate 2nd slide.
Finally, we'll go over to the skills section including a neat and easy to create graphical representation for skill levels.
As a last point, we'll add language skills in order to finalize the Resume for the Project Manager applicant.
As a first step, I'll introduce in detail how the resulting Resume for the Web Developer looks like
and discuss a bit about her general profile in order for you to get an idea who she is.
We'll also cover why this does have an influence on design decisions and
why you should think about this when creating your own Resume.
First, we'll chose the right color scheme for our Web Developer Resume.
Then we'll chose the right font types & styles.
Now we'll add the general info section for the Web Developer Resume.
As we'll need some more space for the work experience section, we'll put that on a separate 2nd slide.
Finally, we'll go over to the skills section including a neat and easy to create graphical representation for skill levels.
I bet for 90% of you, the question of which file format to attach to your job application is a no-brainer.
Just to be sure the other 10% gets it right, I added this lecture... ;)
Depending on your version of PowerPoint,
there are two different click paths to export your resume as a PDF File from PowerPoint.
I will introduce you to both of them in this 1 page PDF guide I made for you.
It can happen sometimes that the file size of your Resume PDF File
will be too big to attach to an email or upload to a job application portal.
I created this lecture for exactly this case and will show you
how to reduce the file size of your PDF Resume directly in PowerPoint.
Typos and other obvious mistakes are the number one reason for Resumes to hit the trash bin before even being read to the end! In order to avoid this you should invest some extra time in your Resume review.
Before you leave, let's shortly recap what you've learned in the course...
Test yourself: How much do you remember from this Course?
You've made it through the course and should now be ready to create an awesome Resume by yourself in PowerPoint. Go get that new job you've been dreaming about! :)
And don't forget to post a review and leave any thoughts or questions in the comments section.
Please feel free to share your success stories or even show off your brand new Resume if you feel like it...
What Next? I have some suggestions for you... ;)
