Lecture 2 3 pages

Meet your course instructor.

Lecture 3 02:11

We get to learn what art therapy is and how it can help us.

Being creative is a form of self expression and can help us to communicate better and enhance relationships.

As well as being a tool for self healing, art can be used as an active form of meditation.

Lecture 4 00:42

We take a look at the various forms of art therapy, including, drama and constructing.

Lecture 5 8 slides

In this lecture we look at the role of an art therapist, what makes them different to other therapists, and how they are trained to look for non-verbal communication.

We also look at some of the reasons that people choose to work with an art therapist.

Lecture 6 02:27

Besides the obvious stuff like paint and coloured pencils, we explore the various materials that can be used in the creative process of making art.

You'll learn ways in which you can use everyday objects like cereal boxes and remnant pieces of fabric to create your very own masterpieces!

Lecture 7 01:35

Of course, the list of art supplies is endless, but in this lecture, we cover the basics and go over the absolute essentials you'll need to enjoy creating art and exploring your inner artist.

You might be surprised to learn, that in fact you need very little to get started, just some paper and a few pencils can produce magnificent expressive art.

Section 2: Therapeutic Art And Self Explorartion Lecture 8 00:42

In this introduction to section two, we'll be looking at ways in which to use art for self expression and as a tool for healing.

We'll also be covering the endless benefits that expressive art can bring to our emotional and physical well being.

Lecture 9 01:36

Creating a vision board is a great exercise to document what you want for your life.

By way of imagery, you are able to display exactly what you want for your future. By looking at images that represent your future, and based on the law of attraction, you will bring into your life the things you think about the most.

Lecture 10 01:26

This is a neat little activity that encourages self expression and offers an opportunity for self awareness.

Lecture 11 01:02

This scribble drawing is so simple but can offer the perfect escape for us to relax and unwind. We can spend as little or as much time as we wish on this exercise, depending on your mood!

Lecture 12 01:47

Creating your own emotion wheel is a great visual image to help you understand and remember how emotions are connected.

With the downloadables included, we get you started on exploring what different colours mean to you and how they correspond to your emotions and feelings. Lecture 13 9 slides

This activity is about creating art, based on your feelings.

It will help you gain an understanding of how your emotions influence your creativity when you are making art.

Although this art therapy exercise is a simple activity, it engages your intuition.

Lecture 14 01:30

Affirmation cards help develop our self esteem and increase confidence.

Expressing positive thoughts about yourself will naturally reduce any negatives ones you may have.

Doing this regularly will help replace any negative, self limiting beliefs you may have, and in turn have a positive impact on your actions and how you feel about yourself.

Lecture 15 01:37

This might sound a bit strange, but in fact it's a wonderful exercise and can be used at times when you need a little TLC.

It is especially good for those people wanting to work on their self esteem and self acceptance.

Its an exercise in appreciation and love towards yourself.

Lecture 16 02:11

For some people, emotions can be so challenging that they find it difficult to face them and this in turn can create issues of their own.

This activity affords you a safe way to honour your painful emotions. You can do this at a pace that suits you and that you feel comfortable with.

Lecture 17 8 slides

In a world that is so obsessed with body image it is no wonder we can have hang ups about our physical appearance.

This is a great exercise that helps you become more comfortable looking at yourself.

By practising non judgement, you can alleviate some of the critical thoughts towards yourself when looking at your reflection.

Lecture 18 03:06

This is a super fun activity involving creating face masks for the purpose of self exploration and self analysis.

It can be important for us to recognise what we show of ourselves and what we keep private, and understand why this is.

Over time, and as you progress through the course, you will build on your self esteem and confidence, and often this results in sharing more of yourself with the rest of the world. Its great for enhancing relationships and improving communication in general.

Lecture 19 02:16

As it sounds, its a wonderful activity, designed to deliver a massive bowl of TLC.

This art therapy exercise, uses images to self soothe and create positive sensations.

Through self awareness we are able to regard all those pleasant experiences, realised through our senses.

Lecture 20 02:41

This is a self exploration exercise, helping you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

It'll also help reveal emotions and feelings, that are being communicated through the art that you've created.

Ask yourself questions about your work and about the art. Rather than thinking about the images and their meaning, think about the feelings that they communicate.

Lecture 21 20 slides

Meditative painting for the body and mind - Your body and mind is a two way, expressive channel that you can use to your benefit.

A desired state can be achieved by releasing negative feeling, by way of painting to express what you are feeling. You can also bring in positive, healing energy from the paintings you create.

Section 3: Art For Pure Enjoyment Lecture 22 Text

In this section we take the time to simply enjoy art, for the sake of pleasure and recreation.

There are many activities and exercises all created with you in mind. You'll find zentangles, mandalas and even lectures on creating your own pencil shading guide!

Lecture 23 03:21

This is a perfect way to try active meditation.

Mandalas are simply magical to create. Although they look really complicated, they are as easy or as complex as you want them to be.

Drawing and colouring-in a mandala, can be very therapeutic.

You can design a mandala to symbolise a state of mind that you would like to achieve.

Lecture 24 03:39

Zentangles are abstract drawings, realised from repetitive structured patterns.

Creating these wonderful abstract drawings is an enjoyable experience that anybody can do.

Like mandalas, creating zentangles is a form of active meditation. It affords you many benefits, including helping you to relax, and reducing stress levels.

Lecture 25 03:10

This activity involves the therapeutic process of creating a drawing of natural objects, like trees, grass and flowers.

This activity helps gain skills of visual representation of an object, and transfer that vision to paper. Texture, line and shape, will help you do this.

Lecture 26 03:35

As we know, there are many aspects to this creative process.

Drawing still life is extremely calming and puts us in a great state of mind. Everything from building our composition (arranging our objects), to considering all the contours, lines, shape, and shading.

Don't worry about the end result. Still life is about how you see an object, not anyone else.

Lecture 27 01:56

This art therapy exercise, teaches the classic still life drawing method, using toned paper, charcoal and chalk.

This tried and tested method of still life drawing gives an understanding of the concept of parallel line shading.

You will gain an awareness of still life as related objects, as well as the concept of repetition of shape within a composition (arrangement, layout).

Lecture 28 01:12

This art activity teaches the eye to draw what it sees, not what it thinks it sees.

As you draw, keep your eye on the object that you are drawing, and not on your hand.

Lecture 29 05:29

You'll learn many techniques in this lecture, including, hatching, cross hatching and stippling.

These techniques can be used exactly as described, or you can adapt them to suit whichever way works best for you.

It is worth noting that there is no right way or wrong way, when it comes to shading.

Lecture 30 01:21

In this lecture we show you how to create your very own shading guide!

As well as being a relaxing activity, you'll be able to add even more depth to your masterpieces!

Section 4: Therapeutic Art For Family Bonding Lecture 31 01:47

This section is all about art that you can enjoy with the family. There is something for everyone and you'll be reminded that creativity is for everyone - not just the young!

Family dynamics can often be challenging. Art can be one way of bringing everyone together, and help to address any conflicts that may exist in the home.

Its great for children who may be experiencing bullying or have suffered emotional trauma.

Lecture 32 02:17

This exercise helps us to access our inner child and enter a world where we feel more comfortable with ourselves, totally absent of judgement.

We all have within us, an inner child!

Lecture 33 03:17

This art therapy activity is a whole lot of fun!

Traditionally face painting is for actors in theatre, or for children having fun days out.

This doesn't mean that we can't break with tradition and paint our own faces.

Lecture 34 9 slides

Learn how to roar with a tiger face!

This exercise is great for family bonding and can be enjoyed by everyone - young and old.

Lecture 35 01:50

This is messy but is great fun.

This activity is all about creating beautiful works of art, using just chalks and string.

This creative process provides an experience that is both therapeutic in its creation and in the way you use the materials.

A chalk line is a length of string, covered with chalk. This string is stretched tightly across to points of a surface, pulled up and snapped down. The result is wonderful!

Lecture 36 01:10

A great way of using up any spare fabrics, such as yarn, cotton or wool, is to create a fabric assemblage.

You can spend as little or as long as you want on creating your art piece. Be sure to hang your creation somewhere where it'll be seen and enjoyed by you everyday!

Lecture 37 10 slides

Working with clay is a very therapeutic process, that can help with healing.

Clay is a wonderful sculpting material, that is a joy to work with.

This activity involves making a head out of clay, but you can make anything you desire. The clay used is a self hardening clay and doesn't require an oven.

Lecture 38 9 slides

Why buy a pinata when you can make your own?

Spend some family time and create a fantastic party piece for all your guests to enjoy. Fill your pinata with whatever treats you wish. You could even fill it with jokes and forfeits to get the party started!

Lecture 39 13 slides

This is truly magical and can be enjoyed by adults too!

Imagine creating your own fairytale? Well, now you can. Bring to life all the characters you've always wanted to be and get to live in your own castle, with this creative writing exercise.

Why not create a book that contains a collection of fairytales?

In the downloadable resources, you'll find plenty of inspiration for characters and backdrops.
